There is a bunch of conflicting information here. If you have to do an area/
density curve, what I have works. If you have FM criteria, then you need a
letter stating what the commodity and occupancy is and how it is stored,
preferably with direction to specific tables in the data sheets. If someone
wants ESFR protection and to follow FM criteria, they need to tell you the
storage arrangement and where in DS 8-9 to look.

Nick-

I may be wrong but I don’t think you can do that with ESFR heads…..

K=Q/ÖP

K=42/Ö7

K=42/2.65

K=15.85

Use K14 sprinklers or K16.8 depending on what your water supply is.

Mark-

So riddle me this, I’m working on a project that specifies ESFR heads and FM
wants .42/2000. What are my options ?

So the answer is, no. FM has not banned ESFR systems.

They have just stopped recognizing the ESFR term. Many sprinklers you know as
‘ESFR’ they simply refer to as a ‘storage sprinkler.’ Likewise as Travis and
Craig noted, there are some sprinklers they recognize as ‘storage’ that are not
identified as ESFR by the manufacturer.

I may be having a senior moment but I swear I remember reading something about
FM not allowing ESFR systems….. Is that even remotely true?
