.42/4000 is an unusual one. Is it a specific risk? When FM ask for a storage design from 8-9, my answer would be: FM’s tables for storage sprinklers cover quick response and standard response sprinklers. In general terms, the ESFR sprinkler is a quick response storage sprinkler and the CMSA head is a standard response storage sprinkler. So you do a design with quick response storage sprinklers. If you want to cover your bases, pick a sprinkler/design criteria that exceeds that in NFPA ESFR tables. You will find that many of the design criteria seem to reflect what was in the ESFR design criteria. Although many have now been updated with further testing that has been done.
With regards to a CMDA design criteria, most of FM’s data sheets for storage including special commodities, have been updated to the end head pressure design criteria. FM have probably listed K14 ESFR sprinklers as storage or non-storage heads. So you could use those in their CMDA design. Also have a look in FMDS 3-26. They have design criteria for HC-1, 2 & 3 (which are normally CMDA designs) for the K25 (ESFR) sprinkler, along with some others. So even though they are asking for CMDA, they may accept an alternative design? I find the FM guys pretty approachable down here. Just ask them what the options are. Good luck. FM has not banned ESFR systems. They have just stopped recognizing the ESFR term. Many sprinklers you know as ‘ESFR’ they simply refer to as a ‘storage sprinkler.’ Likewise as Travis and Craig noted, there are some sprinklers they recognize as ‘storage’ that are not identified as ESFR by the manufacturer.
