You can do both designs (density/area and end head pressure), we do it frequently to cover different risks within the same area. A sprinkler doesn’t know what it is! It is just a orifice/k factor with some pressure behind it. We would typically use smaller ‘storage’/ESFR heads and do one calculation for the CMDA design and another one for the storage design.
For example: The VK500 is a UL approved ESFR sprinkler. It is FM approved as a quick response non-storage sprinkler and also FM approved as a quick response storage sprinkler. It can be used in various types of designs. But I agree, clarification is required. FM has not banned ESFR systems. They have just stopped recognizing the ESFR term. Many sprinklers you know as ‘ESFR’ they simply refer to as a ‘storage sprinkler.’ Likewise as Travis and Craig noted, there are some sprinklers they recognize as ‘storage’ that are not identified as ESFR by the manufacturer.
