Trevor has been corresponding more with me, and it's clear they're looking into fixing something on the msb end. And since mine worked fine before the 7.5 change and works fine through a local Squeezebox server, even if the problem is specific to the 2Wire modems it looks like there's hope for getting it working again for those of us not planning to change out our gateways...
