Conggrats, if it's works.

I did a similar thing when I was on adsl I bridged the providers modem
and used my wrt54gl with tomato to set up ppoe etc.
Bridging bypasses the the modem completely so that the wrt54gl gets the
external ip directly.

I suppose turning of DHCP on the WAN side, will make your wrt54gl
getting the direct connection from Bell ?
I'm not sure why this workaround works ?

Maybe Bell prohibit you from bridging the darn thing.

If you get an external IP for your wrt54 you are probably good to go.

Otherwise running 2 routers in series as routers can be a bit of hassle
regarding port-forwarding and similar stuff, as it has to be done in
both places
