Last.fm always required a "subscription", but they used to allow free subscriptions for third party devices like SqueezeBox and smart phones. Last.fm changed this recently to restrict free subscriptions to only their computer program. You can still scrobble to your Last.fm account via SqueezeBox, you just can't play Last.fm radio via such hardware players with a free subscription.
