We are all happy to hear that 'scp' works well for you.  I agree that
'scp' used by itself will be more efficient.  But from an ease of use 
and retraining perspective the use of Zmodem or Kermit to transfer
files over the encrypted/compressed terminal session is perfectly
fine.  Both Zmodem and Kermit send data as a stream without the need
to block for Acknowledgements.  With compression the added overhead
caused by the additional checksum verification will be insignificant.

Don't worry, we won't force you to use Zmodem or Kermit if you do not
want to.  But for the rest of us who are used to typing 

  kermit -s <file>
  kermit -g <file>
  sz <file>

it is perfectly okay for us to continue doing so.
