I've already suggested this to him, but he continues to blame the drives.

This is a funny issue. This guy would agree with you - he claims that there
is no such driver. However, this driver issue was a problem experienced by
someone else, and from what he could determine, there were bad sectors on
the drive, and the Maxtor driver was failing to deal with them, crashing and
reloading, and the result was peculiar disc damage leaving parts of a
directory unreadable.
