I work in a computer shop that has in the past sold Maxtor hard drives as
the brand of choice. Maxtor had a three year warranty on their drives but
has changed the warranty to one year. Recently I have seen a significant
number of defective Maxtor drives returned. I think that the store record is
four on the same day. This might not sound like much, but it is a small
computer store and this level of failure is unheard of. I have no trouble
believing that a replaced drive could be defective again four times. These
failures are all recent Maxtor drives, 40 to 120GB. I have a 4GB Maxtor in
my Max and it has worked fine for years.

I recommend buying a hard drive based partly on the warranty the
manufacturer gives. For example Western Digital has two classes of drives,
less expensive models with 2MB cache and one year warranty, and more
expensive models with 8MB cache and a three year warranty. The price gap
isn't very big but your investment is much better protected with a three
year warranty (and you get the performance benefit of the 8MB cache).

Every drive manufacturer has some drives that fail within the warranty
period, you want to avoid the drives with a higher failure rate. A few years
ago I would have recommended against purchasing a Western Digital drive. My
experience with recent Maxtor drives has been poor and I wouldn't recommend
one to a friend. On the other side Maxtor is an easy company to deal with
for warranty replacement and I am sure that they will in the future make
good drives (watch for a three year warranty).

This is just my opinion. Take it or leave it.
