Just a minor point that may save some trouble, especially if you are
using a dial up modem. I leave the TCP/IP set to PPP at all times and
connect two computers with a crossover cable through AppleTalk set to
ethernet with no problem. I found using only TCP/IP ethernet for file
transfers a major pain although it could be done. I am using a SMC card
that was relatively cheap but I had to download a Mac driver from their
web site. The card would not work with OS 8.1 so I did have to upgrade
the OS. I do leave file sharing off except when I want to transfer
files, just as a precaution. The only time I have a minor problem is
when I boot from the OS disk and the system messes up the serial port
settings but I do that so seldom that I haven't bothered to see if there
was an easier solution.
