Good point. Is auto sensing accomplished, say in the case of Starmax 5000, in the pci card ? If auto sensing is present, will the computers read/write if a crossover cable is used ? Maybe i'll have to expieriment.
I do not know about the Starmax 5000. I have a 3000 and bought a card for it quite some time ago when I got a new Mac. Before then our network was all AppleTalk based. Since the new Macs all have auto sensing, I really never needed to find out if the 3000 had it or not. I suspect it does not. Also, I now have an ethernet switch, so it is even less of an issue for me.
If you are connecting two computers, all you really need is one of them to auto-sense. The one with auto-sense will adjust itself as required. If both auto-sense, that is fine too. If you use a cross-over cable, then auto-sensing will see this and adjust accordingly.
You may want to experiment a bit with the computers next to each other, just to make sure the iMac (was it?) does have auto-sensing on its ethernet lines.
