I recently used a USR Message+ (normally I use Elsa ML56k) and had similar
problems. In about 50% of the cases the modem responds with "ERROR" after
selecting independent mode from menu. On "ERROR" cases STFax wouldn't go
into independent mode when quitting although it was adjusted to.
I've testet with hyperCOM30Z.device and serial.device (OS3.5) with not much
difference in result.
Also played with timeouts without success.
Only thing that helped was setting Log to Debug (even with no logfile) so I
got 100% "OK" responses.
