OK, could have been modems, I read an article about them when they went
under which gave an example bidding battle where they had to drop out at a
unit price of a only few pounds.

Shame companies do not see the big picture, customer calls, complaints and
call outs due to flaky cheapo modems will quickly erode the saving.
