On my Debian unstable(sid) the file is  /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
This is a base(just the base) potato install,upgraded to sid then
installed all other packages.This will be as close to a straight sid
install as possible right 
now.
I suggest you get rid of the older files and move the one from
/root in /etc/X11 and you should be fine.
