Have you seen this link?

might give you an idea what to de-install to get it up and running. And
have you tried to run anxious? I did a sid update last week, ran
anxious, and was up and running. Just had to tweak the resolution
settings.
For setting up the modem at the command prompt try pppconfig (man
pppconfig)
