I feel this pain very often too.  It was one of the things (though not
the only thing) that motivated me to write the @ImportProperties
annotation (http://www.badboy.com.au/stripes/import.html).   There are
various things like this that have been long standing issues and argue
against the proprosition by some that stripes is "feature complete" -
there's still a lot to do!
