I agree with Craig (not that it matters, a 
veto is a veto =:0). 

We've always supported specifications 
rather than specific client technologies. 
Since this is not the markup specified by 
HTML 4.01, I don't see how we can make it 
the default. In practice, browsers may 
ignore the slash as an undefined 
attribute, but we do not support undefined 
attributes.
