Well, if it were a SCSI drive, I'd suggest various SCSI things.

For this drive, first I'd check if it is a Western Digital. If it is,
check the jumpers on the drive and make sure that it is set to the "Single"
setting. Western Digital drives have a Single setting which is different
from their Master setting, and it makes a difference that one use the
Single setting when they are alone on their bus.

If that is not an issue, there's a whole slew of things one can try and no
easy way to tell which is really necessary. It sounds like you may have
some hard drive problems, because from what you wrote, your floppy drive is
working fine otherwise. Although, you might try writing to your floppy
from a CDROM. If that works okay, I'd say the problem is in the hard
drive. If that gives you the same symptoms, then the problem is probably
in the floppy.

If the problem is in the floppy, I'd try replacing the floppy cable.

If the problem is in the hard drive, I'd try the easy stuff first. Rebuild
your desktop if you haven't done that in a while. Run Norton's Disk Doctor
and let it look for problems--or Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior. You
might also try replacing the IDE cable.

If you have a convenient way to back up your hard drive, I'd just erase and
reinitialize the drive and install fresh system software. You could have
corrupt drivers on the drive, corrupt OS software, problems with
fragmentation or such.

Ultimately, it could be the drive going bad but if you're not having other
problems with the drive that seems unlikely.

Oh, have you upgraded your OS without updating the driver on the hard drive
recently?
