THE solution is to not add any "grippies" but to make the whole splitter
bars (Sidebar, Message Pane, etc.) double-clickable to automatically
collapse/expand them.
This behavior doesn't violate any Apple HIG and I think will make users
happy again.
Yes that could work. you have to make the dividing line a little
thicker. Enough for the mouse pointer to have to latch on to.
