LOng file name simply means that it can have more than 8 chars and even
contain the space. Like instead of "Ntscpcom.exe" it would be "netscape
communicator.exe"
Dos with LFN support such as DOS 7.0 then changes it to netsca~1.exe
Older DOS chops off the end and can't do bugger all with it.

Okay, first, just a mention, in case it was unintentional, there seemed to
be a tone of condescension in that question, as if you thought we are nuts.
Now, assuming that was not the intention, I'll tell you what I see in the
old machines.

I see a resource which is still usable, often going to waste. I see
something which can make the internet so accessible as to become the
meeting place for the whole world. I want to see even the very poor able
to join us in this meeting place. To have access to the wealth of
information available here. to be able to join their voices to ours.
I don't personally have anything against fast computers beyond thier silly
price. I'm a frugal sort. I'm also not wealthy by the standards of my
community. I wish to extract the maximum use of my dollar and my
resources. I can finagle my way into a 486 for less than $500 to buy a
system ready to go. To do the same with a pentium class is still a minimum
of $1,000. It just makes sense. Now, if a 286 which goes for under $100
complete can get someone on the net and communicating, why shouldn't it?
It needs people like me with the interest to learn how to do it and teach
it to others. It is still a rarified interest but there's a social need
for it.
Speaking of social need, then there's the business of diversification of
economy. By promoting alternate means of computing you keep the commercial
field open, preventing the sort of monopoly that begins to get slack and
treat it's customers rudely, producing shoddy product and poor service,
milking the customers like cows and growing fat off them. No, I'm not
pointing fingers, just illustrating what happens if a monopoly exists,
which at this time in the computing world it does not. I'd like to help
keep it that way.

I thought I was funny but it's not unusual to find I'm wrong!
