Even I have encountered that, and I know next to nothing about computers.
People who know little have nonetheless heard much and are terrified of the
idea that someone might do something horrid to their computer, via modem,
when they aren't looking!
It's rampant and quite unreasonable, but a serious concern for me, as I
dislike distrust.  Fear interferes with good relationships.
