Def: A potentiometer is a variable-value resistor - an electrical part that can change how much current it allows to pass, usually by the turn of a knob. Most knobs on electrical equipment are of this sort. I did, indeed, mean a knob that would change the vertical shape of the screen, not by the number of lines, but by the height of the physical area that the image is allowed to occupy.
