You probably need to start debugging on the kernel level. Using firescope
or the beeping patch could be a start.

SysRQ still working means it comes back somewhat, but probably does not
make it into userspace.

If your kernel is not pretty new (around 2.6.18 or newer), booting with
"noapic" is also always a good idea for troubleshooting.
