I'm curious if there's any data on local gas resources versus those from
far away. Whenever I talk with someone about the gas drilling, I have to
wonder if it is more sustainable to drill for gas locally, or to get our
resources from places like the Middle East. I can only imagine that
their energy extraction sites have significantly less regard for the
environment, and the amount of energy used to ship that energy to us
must be outstanding as well. If those assumptions are true, wouldn't it
then be more sustainable to get our non-renewable resources locally?
Now, I understand that this is a business based on bringing in money,
not focusing on the environment. But as long as my daily lifestyle
relies on non-renewable resources (which I would assume anyone reading
this email is on the same boat), I can't say that I oppose drilling for
gas. Of course, I would strongly prefer that any resource use has the
smallest impact possible, and that the environment is a top priority
rather than economics.
I don't want to see our landscape destroyed, but I can't say that I
would prefer someone else's to suffer because of my resource use.
Wouldn't we all want to use less energy if we saw the impacts to our
local environment? If these gas drilling companies operating locally
actually manage the land and waste water to a reasonable degree,
wouldn't that be better than shipping in our energy from far away where
it's extracted with no regard for the environment?

Dear Friends--Many thanks to Gay for forwarding this e-mail and to Sandy
and Bill for all of the work they did to construct the site. It is
indeed
very revealing. And chilling. Especially chilling is the introductory
sentence:
"Gas drilling is coming soon to the Finger Lakes Region. Rumors abound,
but
one thing is sure: in the next few years residents will see a dramatic
transformation of the local area to a more industrial landscape."
[If you have "styles" for your e-mail and this is turned on the last
phrase
is in italics for my emphasis.]
Gee.... This is the beautiful Finger Lakes. I went for a ride through
our
gorgeous hills this afternoon. It is deeply saddening that we may soon
have
an "industrial landscape" instead of lush green hills in our future. And
a
toxic future at best. I think we should resist this transition to the
extent possible. Thanks for listening. Tom
P.S.: And so much for the tourist industry that supports so many people
in
the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier!!
