Andy et al., The issue is about extraction of natural gas, in contradistinction to fuel.

I'm curious if there's any data on local gas resources versus those from far away. Whenever I talk with someone about the gas drilling, I have to wonder if it is more sustainable to drill for gas locally, or to get our resources from places like the Middle East. I can only imagine that their energy extraction sites have significantly less regard for the environment, and the amount of energy used to ship that energy to us must be outstanding as well. If those assumptions are true, wouldn't it then be more sustainable to get our non-renewable resources locally?
