Andy,
To answer your specific question:
Gas that is being extracted here or will be extracted here via hydrofracking
is not being 'used locally.' It goes into small feeder pipes that go to
larger and then larger ones, and becomes part of the global supply, sold and
shipped to whoever buys it wherever. It is not a 'local' resource like
home-grown vegetables.

To reply to your comments about preventing mountain top removal in WV, KY
etc:
* Use less energy.
* Enforce the environmental laws.
* Join forces with the groups fighting mountain top removal and valley fill.
thanks,
Hilary Lambert

Yes, I understand there are different energy sources, but in my mind
they mean the same thing in the end. To say that they are different
would imply that if there was no gasoline, we wouldn't drive cars. I
highly doubt that is the case. Most likely, if we aren't extracting
natural gas, we're really just destroying a mountain in West Virginia.
(I'm not sure exactly what all the uses of natural gas are, but I'm
assuming that it's mostly electricity generation or things like water
heating that would otherwise be done with coal.)

So maybe the question is not about the Middle East then. Maybe the
question should be, if I reject local gas drilling, am I effectively
contributing to mountain top removal in WV? I just think we should be
responsible about our energy locally when we can. Yes, it concerns me
that it will change our landscape and our water sources which is why it
is so important to regulate this closely, but I'm guessing mountain top
removal is no better, so why push our problems on another community?
