That is correct.  The server returns a status code, which is good for your 
browser, or search engine robots, or proxies, and actual web content, which 
is good for the person reading it.

More common, I suspect, is the reverse problem, where the content says "File 
not found" but the status code is "200 OK" -- leading to lots of useless 
results in search engines.

As for WordPress -- I'm running WP 1.5 and AFAIK my feeds return the proper 
status codes, and I didn't have to hack them to do it.  Maybe it's some 
plugin people are using?
