I keep trying to pluck up the courage to come along to one....

That sounds workable for custom renders, but how well does it play with
the default style?  What about routing?

Brilliant, thanks Andy and Tom for the excellent clarification.  I've
not got back to the road network yet - I'm mostly concentrating on
buildings at the moment - but at least for the higher levels I'll be
able to continue as I was when I do get back to it.  In the meantime,
I'll watch the discussion about tertiary/residential/unclassified and
let it percolate.
