I've thought of them as something like "really major but not
Interstate-grade roads".  Primary roads are main roads, obviously, but
trunks have better throughput.  I mentioned MD 90 earlier; in the same
region is the easternmost part of US 50 which is a divided highway
with at-grade intersections and periodic (but not frequent) traffic
lights.  It's designed to get a lot of people to and from Ocean City,
MD in an efficient way.  I think it definitely fits as a trunk.

I think most of the things I would consider trunk are divided, but I
have seen undivided roads that others have tagged trunk and thought,
"Yeah, that makes sense there."
