We're not deleting their work, we're replacing it. The data will still be there and I believe that it really doesn't matter whose name is on the author tag or whose names "appear in lights" in the history chain. It only matters that the data (correct and up to date) is in the OSM dataset and can never be at risk again. Therefore I can't see any reason that all OSM contributors are not madly remapping right now, whether from an armchair of foot/bike/car.
