Shoe-horning is a loose way of saying that you go around the bend to
make something do what it isn't really designed to do. In this context
you install MyGate and create sophisticated filters that probably
required some serious thought in their formulation, all in a effort to
do what a news client would easily do. In the end, though it may work
for you, it's still not as elegant or functional a solution as one
that's specialized for the job.
Shoe-horning POP to work like IMAP would be to leave messages on the
server and run those BCC filters to send copies of messages to
yourself so you can keep copies of sent messages at all your various
installations. There are also sophisticated methods to deal with other
short-comings of POP when managing the same mail from multiple
locations.

I've been there as well too. :)
Only I've done the reverse. I used a single solution for mail and news
and have since moved to using separate clients for each.
Be that as it may, I think we're digressing from my original point
which is that having the list traffic mirrored to a secured NNTP
server could provide distinct advantages for those who have a news
client and wish to efficiently manage the list traffic, even though
they may be interested in reading just a small amount of it. Not only
does it spare bandwidth but features such as scoring, thread watching,
filter expiration improves things even further.

I wasn't even going there. :)
It doesn't matter to me either way if TB! manages news except for the
potential problem of focus. IMAP support is an added task for
providing development and technical support energy. NNTP support and
provisions for newsgroup management specific functionality is another
whole feature-set to pay attention to. Simply downloading all messages
from a news server isn't what the protocol is about and what it really
has to offer, though yes, you can do that if you like. If that's all
people really needed then there wouldn't be newsgroups but just
mailing lists. :)

The thing is that IMAP *is* about e-mail and TB! is an e-mail client.
It *should* support IMAP since it's being more commonly used now.

Yes. I've seen posts about those filters.

That's you. :)
I'd be very dissatisfied with it. This is why I haven't been using it,
though I do subscribe to 7 newsgroups.
