We allow it at the 9-12 level. Each student is given an account and are actually encouraged to check it each day. Extra-curricular sponsors and teachers use it to post practice schedules, transfer files to students back and forth, etc. I create a district-wide distribution list for each of the activities so it makes it very easy for students, teachers, and sponsors to communicate. I have also noticed students using it to send Word documents (homework/assignments) to their home accts. to finish papers on the weekend or nights. Students are not allowed to use email during class time without the teacher's approval. We are on block schedule so there is time in-between blocks or before school to check mail. We also have GroupWise Web Access so teachers and students can check their school accounts from home. We recently had quite an online conversation going between the Supt. and the Student Body about retaking the ITED tests at the high school. They did this through the distribution lists. We have had some trouble with kids using email....probably four discipline issues in past two years. Each was handled by the principal using our policy with my help only to help track down the guilty party.
