OK, no, no subscription, so I'm not expecting the guide or any of that. 
As I said earlier, just wanting to use it like a VCR. It's tuning (and 
yes, it is analog cable; hope those converter boxes work come Feb!), 
the tv will get the channels when hooked up through the Tivo, but when 
I first go to "Live TV" it will be a nice clear picture, and in a 
couple of seconds it goes fuzzy, then in a few more seconds boots back 
to the Tivo menus. Sounds like it may be losing the tuning? And when I 
go to manually set to record, where you set the day, time and channel 
just like a VCR, there are no channels in the place to select; it's 
supposed to be a list you scroll through, can't punch the numbers 
in.                                                                    
MZ, thanks for checking on the remote and for the link; I missed that 
on the Tivo site. I'll try it and see if it helps with the 
remote.

please, keep it coming. I'm probably just missing something really dumb
