Like, 1999-2000 ancient. If that's correct that could be the problem. If the unit is calling home it should upgrade to 3.0.1, I'm not sure why it wouldn't. You might call TiVo support and say you just bought an old Series1 and you want to make sure it upgrades before considering a subscription.
