I have to say, I mostly do just the very same:

I turn on and off unknown files.

So I find this quite remarkable.

On the other end, I can't remember ever having wanted
to see "C" files.

Wait. Let me pull that notebook theme again...

How about using a notebook on the left side with two tabs.

"MAR" files on the first tab.
"?" on the second tab, maybe with a tab label in red
("Unknown Files")

If there are no "?" files, there wouldn't be a second tab.

Question is, who wants to see "!C" files and where?

Maybe more tabs? Probably not....

Damn. Cracking this UI wart is harder than I thought.

An argument for the current solution is that I always see
if the "?" box is checkmarked or not.

If we hide that inside a menu we don't see it any more.
Neither if it is inside a hidden page of notebook.

As a side note, it annoys me at times that my selection is
not persistent. But making it persistent may be a bit dangerous
for newbies. They could miss an unknown file...
