This aspect of the Touch falls into the "no good deed goes unpunished"
category.

All prior "Slim Device" players prior to this required a local server in
order to play local music. That's where the name "Slim Device" came from
- it referred to a minimalist network player design that counted on
access to a server that could do the heavy lifting.

In the Touch, they had a shade more processing power and decided it'd be
nice to let the player directly access flash drives and memory cards.
That meant that instantly people were trying to use large external USB
hard drives to play big collections. This often didn't work well. In
fact, the original release of the Touch was delayed almost 6 months
while they tried to tweak code to improve this function. (The
advertising material originally referred to the ability to directly play
USB drives and that got dropped.)

In short, they tried to give a bit of extra functionality and ended up
getting whacked for the effort.

Ultimately, this is still a very good and very handy "slim" network
player and an outstanding buy at $300. The current model Touch will
never be a good stand-alone server.
