The last episode of The Office this season is episode 100. Whatever you think of the creative merits, getting to 100 episodes is the goal of every sitcom because that's the minimum order for daily syndication, which is where the big money is. When the producers signed on to make a US version of the show, they did so knowing that their goal was to stay on the air for 100 episodes, not replicate the genius of the short BBC series. And by that standard, the series is a success. I agree with Dean that the series is getting creatively played out. As a device, having the virtual film crew gives the characters a chance to talk directly to the audience and give the camera a reaction to onscreen action, something like an eye roll or the raised eyebrow. But the presence of the documentary film crew has lost all meaning - who would actually film this stuff for all these years? What's the point of the documentary? Then there is secret information like the last episode of last season where Phyllis accidentally discovers Dwight and Angela together. Only it's not just Phyllis, it's Phyllis and the cameraman, yet at the beginning of the new season the sense is that only Phyllis knows and there's no filmed evidence. I like the writing and acting on The Office and I will continue to watch until they really run out of ideas. And now that they've reached 100 episodes, the push to be creative might lessen and they could run out of ideas sooner rather than later.
