There is NOTHING that you can do with Visual Studio.NET that you can't do with the free download and notepad (or other). Actually, there are things you can do with the command line that can't be done in the VS IDE (multiple modules into single dll, I believe). The only thing that the VS IDE does is make you a bit more productive.
