@Phillip: when you make a brand new installation of Ubuntu (no upgrade, no grub install ..) and it's lead to a grub error (and I'm not the only one in this case) I considere that there is a bug somewhere. Maybe the problem is a misconfiguration of grub yes, but this misconfiguration was set during a normal installation of Ubuntu. For me it is easy to reproduce this beahvior : follow the official installation method. So at this point I agree with sjampoo.
