Okay, I'm back. Even got dragged off at one point to the theater to
watch 'Sharkboy & Lavagirl 3D' by my nephew (who's 19 BTW!). What a
load of $&*" that movie is!

Anyway, back to this slimserver linux malarky.

First, thanks to Robin for all your hard work - seems from your post
above & wiki you burnt the midnight oil in order to track the problem
down.

So here goes with today's attempt.

1. Attempted to 'jump in' and follow the log at the point:

$ perl --version

but hit problems attempting to urpmi the slimserver download, said it
couldn't find it even though it'd just downloaded it!

Thought I'd got nothing to lose by just doing a complete (sixth?)
install of LE2005 and follow Robin's log from the start...

2. Everything in the log went okay, until...

'Ran MandrakeLinux Update'

Found 86 updates, not 83. Okay so there's probably been 3 more added
since Robin did it last night, so I okay them all. Downloads okay, and
then...

'Bad signature' errors on 3 packages. Even though the installer was
told to ignore them it still wouldn't install any of the other 83.

Got round it by deselecting the 3 from the list. This time the 83
installed with no problem. After the installer window 'updated', only
the 3 appeared in the install list so I selected them and this time
they downloaded and installed okay.

Carried on with Robin's log...

Did the urpmi perl-devel and then tried the gcc.

urpmi gcc-3.4.7

No package found. Tried 3.4.8, again without success. Fired up Firefox,
googled gcc, found the homepage, current version 4.0.1. So I try:

urpmi gcc-4.0.1

Comes back with unknown option 4, unknown option 0 (...) but does say
whether I want to install gcc version 3.4.3-7, plus dependencies;
binutils, glibc-devel and libbinutils. Too right I do!

Anywayz, suffice to say after all that... it's WORKING! Whoo hoo!

Went into FireFox and did a http://localhost:9000 and up comes the
SlimServer interface. I'm feeling good!

All I need do now is remove the HD with my music on it from the XP
machine, put it into this Linux box and point slimserver to it, and set
up a scan.

Couple of questions:
1 If I shut down the computer by pressing the power button (remember it
won't have a screen/keyboard connected), and then I start it back up
again will slimserver fire up again and run automatically even though I
assume it will be stuck at the log-in screen? I know XP wouldn't start
the slimserver service unless I logged in, but Linux is better than
that, yes?

2. How do I gain access to this Linux box from my XP machine. I was
told further up this thread to use webmin (urpmi webmin), but is this
the way? I assume I'll be able to take control of this linux box from
another machine on the network? What's the best (easy/secure) way to do
this?

Once again many thanks to Robin, Fabrice, Pat and others for all your
help in getting me running! If we ever meet I owe you a drink or two.

Robbie
