The server will start in most cases, but this is really not a good idea, because you services will not be shutdown properly and some might refuse to start after that. You should try to log into the linux box from the windows machine and type shutdown -h now to stop the machine (root login). > 2. How do I gain access to this Linux box from my XP machine. But I think the best solution is the hardware switch (KVM) so that you can have one keyboard+mouse+screen for two computers.
