This happens, usually caused by sloppy work on the packager who built
the RPM.

Yeah! It really is not normally this hard.

Fat32? NTFS?
Or if you have a spare disk, FTP, use samba, etc. to copy the files
from one to the other.

Yes. But you need to tell it to. The usual install scripts do it, but
since you've been so special....
On mandriva and many other linux, startup is controlled by files in
a set of directories /etc/rc.d/init./*
so if you have a 'slimserver' file in that directory, and it is
all properly protected, you are all set.
There are actually bunches of related directories, you can see them
in /etc/rc.d
where there are directories for each "run level" that is controlled
by your /etc/inittab file. There are zillions of symlinks in there
so that the same scripts are fired off in lots of run levels.
Most installations run with level 5, you can use level 3 if you
don't want to use Xwindows as a default.
The applicable line in my /etc/inittab file looks like
id:5:initdefault:
change the 5 to 3 to start in a character shell.

depends on what you want. you can use the XP telnet program to
just telnet into a text shell. Or use putty for a text shell using ssh.
There are lots of telnet clients for XP.
Webmin is cool if you machine is not on the internet.
it is not secure if the machine has accessible, non-ssl ports.
I manage my slimserver box using a character shell. The only thing
that I miss is MCC gui, that needs X. So when I need that,
I use an Xwindows client. There are lots of them as well.
MCC is really just a pretty GUI over a bunch of command line
utilities such as urpmi, so it is not literally needed. But
it makes life easy.
You could also use a KVM to switch your monitor and keyboard to
the linux box.
I'd suggest getting it all up and happy, use it a while, and
then decide if you need Xwindow access, or if webmin is good
or if you need real security.
Also, if the box is on the open internet, be sure to get Jack
Coates' patched shorewall. Monkeynoodle dot Org
