I also struggled through the ALSA documentation to find something that works. I understand that 'hw' requires exclusive use of the soundcard. It fails if anything else is already using it. 'plughw' is a software interface that can share the card with other apps, or the sounds from your desktop which may already be using it. Hope this helps clear up this part of the mystery!
