I think the next thing is sleep proxy (=service advertisement + MAC
spoofing + wol). I have seen on github at least one project of a sleep
proxy client (to register one's services before going to sleep) but I
have yet to see an open sleep proxy server.
AFAIK the inventor of sleep proxy is the same guy behind mdns and
dns-sd, working with Apple. 
If you observe how recent macs "sleep" in a network managed by an apple
router, that's pretty interesting. The way I see it, a Pi would make for
an excellent sleep proxy server platform.
