> I suspect that the Rage128 will be supported at least as long as theRadeon 7000 seeing as the B&W G3s and Yikes G4s shipped from Apple with the PCI version and many of the AGP G4s shipped with the AGP version.
I suppose so, I didn't think of the Rage 128 as really being an alternative when you're looking for "the best" video card. I suppose the Rage 128 is technically in that list, but I was thinking of cards with comparable performance like the nVidia parts.
You won't get much of that performance from older unsupported Macs with a Radeon 7000 due to the many other bottlenecks in these machines but at least the Rad 7K won't be a slowdown. I suppose most people here are only considering the Rad 7K by flashing a $45 PC version because at $120, the Mac version is a lot of $$ for an older computer. A used Rage128 at $40 (if you can find one) is a better use of your money for an OS X speed boost.
Plus...
That depends on what you mean by "supported". Haven't they already cut some of the hardware acceleration support for the Rage 128 in Panther?
Not in the least. Panther is wonderful with a Rage128, much faster than Jaguar with smooth scrolling and approaching OS 9-like speed (not quite, though). I no longer consider getting a replacement video card for OS use (though for gaming the R128 is useless, but so are my G3/500 & G4/450) and will put my money to better use. It still cannot support Quartz Extreme, though it's not a huge performance difference; mostly eye candy IMO.
