Warning! Theological computer rambling!
The thing is, you (and most people) are looking at the situation as what are the MINIMUM requirements to get this to run; it should really be looked at as What are the minimum requirements to get it to run WELL, with emphasis on the well part. Sure, X will run on a 604 (some versions) but does it run WELL? It will run on a 4MB videocard, but does it run WELL? Can you encode MP3 and watch a video on this type of setup ? Not unless you like a slideshow? And the computer slows to a crawl? If you answer the questions like that, you will know what the minimum for X is. The point of having X is not just to have the shiniest, newest features of Mac OS and it's applications, but to have the capability to use the computer in ways that were wholly and for the most part impossible in the old OS...I was NEVER able to run all the apps on my computer at once and not have it die a horrible death; yet X does this in stride and keeps asking for more. If you cant build the computer to at least take advantage of the software, there isnt much point in building it because using it is going to become a very frustrating experience.
