10.1 will run on a 601 processor if you really want to harm yourself ... in comparison a 604 200MHz does very well.

I have seen X run on a 300MHz 604e and it ran far better than I thought it would. Its useable if you don't use too many apps at one time. It wasn't as bad as you described.

I can second that, I run 10.1.5 on a 7600 with 200 Mhz 604e and somewhat about 380 megs, an ATI Rage PCI graphic card I pulled from a blue & white and 512k cache - and it is usable, kinda slow motion, but when some is used to X its just slow but working (for me to tag tunes, listen mp3 files and even for some video flicks)

The installation took on an old 4x scsi cd drive about an hour for 10.1 and one for the updates up to 10.1.5 - not a single problem, an USB Card and a Firewire Card were supported as well

I can encode with Audion at 0.5x speed and the System is stable, said that I had it full load encoding for 3 days a couple of times

The 7600 is the can for old hardware so it's sexy for me to run it in X (but a lil stupid, too ;-) )

btw upgrading with a g3 400/1mb cache card made it about 3 times faster (1.5x encoding, much faster response in the gui)

so I'd tell if someone has enough nerves to try it, do it on the 604e - and decide if u upgrade your cpu, it's highly recommended

lucks,
cheers,
Sven
