I get the normal kernel boot up and the 'got boot device' message finds the card with the hard disk on and identifies it correctly. The BSD root reports OK. Then I get a message like:

jnl: journal start/end pointers rest! (jnl 0x1d17dc4; s 0x33e600 e 0x33e600)

Which looks like an FS problem with the journalling FS. Something significant is the hard disk's LED is locked on until i reboot.

Eventually, and this is after a LONG time (it happened while I was typing this and doing a few other things so i guess it was about 20 mins, maybe 30) I get this error:

MESH: 0 0 runDBDMA - Arbitrate/Reselect problem.

Which repeats at regular intervals of about 10 mins (I have 3 up currently).

Soooo.... any ideas?

UPDATE:

I attached a pair of Cheetah 18XLs to the bus on a longer cable with a terminator at the end (LVD 68-pin) and it got a bit further through the boot before it stopped. It was merrily loading this time before it stopped - got passed the 'Welcome to Macintosh' line in the boot output, seemed to initialize the ethernet cards, then it locked again. I dunno if the card is to blame, or the cable, or the drive, or OS X.

As a test, boot into OS 9 and then copy some large disk images to and from the disks on the new controller and open them up. Allow the CRC check to run to completion. If it fails, the problem is communication to/from the HDs. I keep a copy of OS 9.2.1 Update (82 MB) around for this purpose.
