I've used both the PowerLogix and the Ryan Rempel cache controllers on first-gen Sonnet G3 and G4 PCI cards without problem. On the other hand, I've never got Sonnet's own software to work correctly, so I just stick with XPF.

The later Sonnet G4s are different animals. L2CacheConfig doesn't handle the cache structure on these, although PowerLogix CPUDirector seems okay. But in any case, my Sonnet G4 800 card conflicts with my 18GB SCSI Barracuda, so I have been forced to run them in separate boxes.

If your external test drive is an 18G Barracuda, I say watch out.
