Well. I got my system back! Tried a bunch of things, and finally this worked--but since all the following steps were done together, I don't know which are the essential ones. I took out the USB only card. I took out the Sonnet Encore G4 and put in the original G3 300. I booted in OS 9 on the same drive with Panther, but on a separate parition. I updated the disk drivers with Disk First Aid. I changed the helper drive to the drive with Jaguar on the onbard IDE. (Thanks Kris) This drive does not have OS 9 so I thought I couldn't use it as a helper drive but apparently I can. When XPF did it's think, I noticed it reinstalled BootX. Previously, I had done this from the menu. Maybe this time it took. I could not select the Radeon 7000 as the output device because it was not listed in XPF. It booted beautifully!

If I'm only going to use on screen, are there any pitfalls to disabling onboard video that anyone knows about? Is it easy to re-enable it?

Thanks for all your help.

Simon, do you happen to know if anyone's had success with that card on a beige? Where can I even find that card?

I formatted and reinstalled, and the problem hasn't gone away.

I would eye those combo cards with a little caution.

I must have been really lucky with mine. It's just a cheap Taiwanese one branded as SoHo. Chipset no idea, worked flawlessly with OS 9 and upto and including 10.2.8 on 9600
